The two of us headed into the Arcadia Management Area on Sunday with a bunch of other bikes to ride some easy dirt before heading into Connecticut for some more easy riding in Pachaug State Forest and the surrounding area in Voluntown.

What a blast! He rode the BMW R75/5 and I was on Elsa, the DRZ400 SM wearing a set of Avon Distanzias. I’m still on the fence about these tires, but they did pretty good in the dirt and gravel. It’s easy to blame the tires and not the rider.

Nobody fell! I was so determined to not fall and I was able to keep the bike upright on two kinda “yikes” moments; one when the back tire hit a big rock and it squiggled all over the place and the other when I came up over the top of a hill and I looked down and there were three large, ledge-like rocks in the road as I was headed downhill. I kept it up and then yelled into the intercom, “Slow down, slow down, slow down! You’re not gonna like this over-the-hill surprise!” back to the boyfriend. He thanked me and he said he thinks his slowing down got a message to those behind him to also slow down.

As for the wildlife:

  • deer 0, BMW 1
  • chicken 0, BMW 1
  • chipmunk 0, BMW 1
  • freaky, deaky death bird (probably a vulture) 0, BMW 1

This is why I don’t lead; he clears the path of suicidal animals.

Small children waving = 3
