Scoot Commute

That jacket looks like you could jump out of an airplane.

I’m standing in line at the Aldi yesterday, wearing my hi-viz yellow AST jacket, purple fleece neck gaiter and armoured overpants, when the check-out person says to me, “Wow, that jacket looks like you could jump out of an airplane!” Well, I gotta tell you, that’s the first time I’ve heard that one.

I laughed and replied, “Oh, I’m on a bike.” I know, real original, but it was the end of the day. She looked at me and her eyes widened, “A motorcycle? I’ve always wanted to learn how to ride a motorcycle.” So now I’m intrigued. I explain how in Rhode Island one takes the BRC at CCRI to get your license. She looks at me and says, “You have to take a class? I didn’t have to do that to get my car license.” I burst out laughing and responded, “Exactly, and that’s the problem!”

She moves my items over the scanner as we continue chatting. I finally ask her why she wants to learn to ride. She stops scanning and looks up at me. “Oh, to escape!” Ok, what? So she explains how if she were ever in a get-away situation and there was only a motorcycle available, she’d love to have the skill to hop on and ride away. Now I don’t know what’s going on over on Smith Hill; who knew that I should be considering escape scenarios involving motorbikes! I’m really happy now that I chose a super-motard.

At this point the woman behind me in line has joined the conversation. She doesn’t think it odd that the check-out woman would want motorbike skills for that quick get away. Everyone is giggling and laughing. Who knew that wearing a hi-viz jacket into a grocery store would cause such a weird conversation. I’m sure I’ll be remembered the next time I stop in.

I’m still trying to think of an event where I would have to hop on a random motorcycle to escape. Maybe my life is much more boring than I think.

I have fielded a few comments about my mode of dress while riding.

I have taken my Ninja off-paved-road (on purpose) several times.

    Good blog.
