The Honorable David N. Cicilline
Providence City Hall
25 Dorrance Street
Providence, RI 02903

Dear Mayor Cicilline,

Congratulations on being named one of the “15 green-leaning mayors” in America by Grist magazine. In that vein I am writing to ask for your support for the 18th Annual Worldwide Motorcycle and Scooter Ride to Work Day on June 15, 2009. As a rider yourself, you would be a tremendous asset by supporting this worldwide initiative to encourage commuters to seek alternative transportation getting to and from work within the great City of Providence.

Akin to your support for “Bike to Work” day, motorcycle and scooter riders who live and/or work in the City want your office to highlight that our choice of daily transportation:

  • reduces greenhouse emissions;
  • reduces traffic congestion making everyone’s commute less stressful;
  • uses less space for parking which provides more spaces for everyone;
  • causes less wear and tear to our roadway infrastructure;
  • uses less fuel and carries cheaper insurance so that we have more money to spend with local merchants.

To show your support, I am asking that you consider issuing the enclosed Proclamation which has been written by the official Ride to Work organization, an established 501(c)4 non-profit organization supporting the use of motorcycles and scooters for transportation. The Proclamation has been issued by many cities in past years including San Diego, Cincinnati and even our neighbor, Cambridge, MA; Providence needs to be added to the list of supporting cities.

In addition to signing the Proclamation, you could commute from your home to City Hall on your own bike with an escort from Providence’s Finest on their Harleys and Vectrixes to demonstrate the variety of rides and the City’s commitment to supporting those who choose to commute with vehicles that tread more lightly on this earth.

Should you have questions, please feel free to contact me or consult the official Ride to Work website at: http://www.ridetowork.org/

Yours sincerely,
